Practical automation solutions with Motoman industrial robots

Together with system partner Klocke Engineering, at this year’s NORTEC Yaskawa will be presenting practical automation solutions with Motoman industrial robots. The highlights at Stand 730 in Hall A3 will be a new training cell and a modular robot cell for palletizing workpieces at CNC machining centres.

Yaskawa has developed a compact and mobile robot unit specially for training and demonstration purposes in the form of “MotoTraining”. Mounted on a table, it can be easily moved around. Scanner-based safety functions permit operation without enclosure or barriers, and the optional connection to a standard 230V supply ensures additional flexibility. The cell can thus also be used in areas without a high-voltage connection.

The core piece of the “MotoTraining” cell is a Motoman GP8 from Yaskawa, equipped with a mechanical-pneumatic gripper and vacuum gripper. The compact and extremely fast handling robot of the GP series was developed for high-speed joining, packaging and general handling applications. With payloads of 7, 8, 12 and 25 kg the new 6-axis robots are the fastest in their class and thus true productivity drivers.

The GP series of robots is controlled by the new Motoman YRC1000 high-performance controller. The ergonomically designed teach pendant of the YRC1000 controller is the lightest in its category at only 730 g. The touchscreen enables intuitive operation and thus simple movement and scrolling with the cursor.

As a system partner to Yaskawa, Klocke Engineering frequently integrates Motoman industrial robots into its automation solutions. Since 1993 the company, headquartered in Kayhude, northern Germany, has been developing and building customized special installations ranging from the simple fixture to highly complex manufacturing cells.

As a current example, at NORTEC Klocke Engineering will be showcasing a modular robot cell for palletizing workpieces at CNC machining centres. Depending on the machining centre’s mode of operation, a 6-axis robot Motoman MH5 with an electric handling gripper performs two different tasks for a broad range of workpiece sizes and geometries. The robot either takes the workpieces directly from the automatic machine, or supplies it as bulk material, e.g. for automatic bar lathes, that can be processed via a high-resolution camera system for object and position recognition. The cell features a modular, compact design with an integral control cabinet. In addition, it is movable and thus suitable for alternating use on several machines.
